Local consumers are changing how they search. According to Uberall research, an estimated $750 billion in consumer spending is shifting toward AI-powered search. About 60% of searches now end without a website click, while 68% of brands are absent from AI-generated recommendations in their category.
This creates a visibility problem that can affect conversions and revenue. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) addresses that shift. SEO traditionally optimizes pages for rankings. GEO optimizes brand entities so they can be cited, summarized, and recommended by AI systems.
The Three Pillars Of GEO
- Source of truth: Keep your business name, address, phone number, hours, and services consistent across every platform.
- Context engineering: Create direct answers to the questions customers ask in natural language.
- Orchestration: Measure citations, refresh content, and improve visibility over time.
Days 1–30: Audit And Build
Begin with data hygiene. Audit NAP information across Google Business Profiles, Apple Maps, Yelp, Bing Places, and major data aggregators. Check location, product, and About pages for useful structured data. Then test realistic customer questions in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. Record where your brand appears, which competitors are recommended, and which sources are cited.
Use those gaps to guide content creation. Build or improve pages that answer one clear customer question. Place the answer near the top. Use concise FAQs, specific local details, dates, original data, named authors, and factual comparisons. AI engines are more likely to extract complete, credible answers than vague keyword-focused copy.
For example, a local business should test prompts such as “best family dentist with Saturday hours” or “coffee shops nearby that allow dogs.” These queries reveal whether AI systems understand important attributes about each location. They also show whether competitors have clearer information, stronger third-party mentions, or content that is easier to cite. Repeat the same prompt set regularly so changes in visibility can be compared over time across all priority locations.
Days 30–60: Build Off-Page Authority
Focus on websites that already rank or receive AI citations for your target prompts. The most useful source may be a specialist publication rather than a large general publisher. Track recurring citation domains, then pursue relevant mentions and placements on those trusted sources. The goal is not link volume. It is contextual authority in places AI systems already use.
Days 60–90: Measure And Improve
Track three metrics weekly: AI citation rate, share of voice against competitors, and content decay. Refresh pages that lose citations with current dates, stronger facts, and new insights.
GEO works best as an ongoing cycle: audit, publish, place, measure, and refresh. As more searches end inside AI-generated answers, the recommendation itself becomes an important conversion surface.
